Trip Detail Info

Overview

Samhae Soju is the only traditional liquor brewery inside Seoul. It is run by Master Kim Taeksang who was designated as Seoul City's Intangible Asset No. 8 for his expertise and skills in traditional Korean liquor brewing. The brewery officially goes back to his grandfather and unofficially to many generations ago as his family lived and made family liquor in the area for centuries. The brewery makes many different liquors, all made from rice, but the kinds vary by season and by ingredients. At the brewery, you can learn how traditional Korean liquors called Makgeolli, Yakju and Soju are made by fermentation and also have an opportunity to taste the three different liquors and Yiwhaju, a special kind of liquor that you can eat like yogurt.

Exclusions

Shopping: a bottle of Samhae Soju (alcohol content: 45%)

Remarks

Yihwaju is a liquor you can eat like yogurt with a spoon. During the Joseon times, aristocratic women enjoyed Yihwaju. Because a woman drinking was not well regarded, they chose to consume alcohol in the same fashion as they would a light snack. You can experience Yihwaju making, but it requires for a special reservation. The Samhae Program includes learning about Korean traditional brewing and tasting of 4 liquors – Soju, Yakju, Makgeolli and Yihwaju. Only the Samhae Program is available on a regular basis. If you want to experience the Discovery Program and the Master Program, you need to make a request and a separate reservation with HummingB Korea for a minimum attendance of five persons.

  • Looking beyond classic tourism
I assume that tourists in Korea know a lot about Korean cuisine, but drinking culture, tradition and tastes are still limited by knowledge that people can grasp from convenient stores - namely green bottled soju and makgeoli in white plastic bottles. These soju and makgeoli are nice, HOWEVER Samhae Experience goes far beyond it. You can learn about process of making, some historical facts, taste and distinguish soju and makgeoli that is not available in convenient stores. Especially I liked that this tour and lecture is given by master himself and he is very open to talk about it and answer questions, so it is like individual approach to customers. So if i'd strongly recommend to enjoy this experience to those who are tourists and to those who live in Korea as well. P.S. Maybe it will be better to give more precise directions on this website on how to get the brewery because it is situated not on the main street but on the side-street. P.P.S. Another suggestions: Among tourists might be lacto-intolerant visitors so it'd better to tell in advance which products might contain lacto-bacterias.

  • Made like a potion to comfort the heart
When I first came to Korea I knew about their drinking culture to an extend. Mostly because we, as visitors, tend to think just on the big brands who care more about the amount they are selling and losing the quality while doing so. But with this experience I could witness how passionate someone can be to preserve the antique culture of making Soju and Makkoli and of course the art of drinking! I must say the people offering this experience were very knowledgeable, kind and friendly which made the moment for me, even more authentic, like being at a friends home. And with that same feeling, the set up of the workshop feels just like that, which I really like; it gives you the confidence to ask as many questions as you want and see how much love is put into their craft. A plus is the place where the workshop is located, downtown Seoul in the traditional area of Bukchon, full of magic and traditions.

  • Best Korean traditiinal alcohol experience
I went there because I wanted to learn the Korean alcohol history and how it is made. They met my expectations and tried a vast variety of alcoholic drinks like Soju and Makeoli. I actually ended up buying a botle of handmade makeoli (rice wine) for 15.000 won.

  • Soju Beyond the Green Bottle
Samhae Soju elevates Soju and other Korean liquors beyond anything I have previously tasted. The beginning of my tour had a thorough explanation on the history of alcoholic drinks in Korea as well as the traditional brewing process of Makgeolli and yakju. Without wasting time, I was poured a sample of the drink still brewing as well as finished products of various flavors. If you've only experienced Makgeolli from a plastic bottle this is a very different experience and taste. A taste that I found to be far more complex. At the conclusion of the fermented beverages, out come the Korean distilled drink of choice, soju. We moved through several different types of soju including: Samhae original, fruit flavored, chamomile, and even amber. The attached picture includes the mushroom used in their mushroom flavored soju. In total, I sample twelve different drinks made by Samhae During my whole experience, I found the hosts to be very warm and informative. They answered all of my questions about Korean liquors and I walked away knowing far more about Soju and Makgeolli than I ever dreamed of. If you have an interest in Korean alcohol, I would recommend this tour to you.
